Mystery Monday - Murder Mystery

Mystery Monday is a daily blogging theme used by many genealogy bloggers to help them post content on their sites. Mystery Monday is where you can post about mystery ancestors or mystery records – anything in your genealogy and family history research which is currently unsolved. This is a great way to get your fellow genealogy bloggers to lend their eyes to what you’ve found so far and possibly help solve the mystery.

There is a family story that I would love to corroborate. It seems my Great Great Grandfather was nearly hanged for a murder he didn't commit.

William McCoy Conner, aka Mack Conner, Mack Coy Conner and Coy Conner, was born 7/24/1861 in Henderson County, NC to Erwin McCoy Conner and Mary A. Rhodes. He had a sister and brother. His father died in The Civil War. His mother met another man and they planned to marry but he was also killed in The Civil War leaving her pregnant with Mack's half-brother.

Mack married Margaret Alice Ensley on 8/3/1885 in Madison County, NC. They had a total of 10 children.

This story begins about 1888-1889. Mack and Alice had thier first child, Lillian Vianna Conner (my Great Grandmother) and maybe their second child, William S. Conner.

The story goes that there was a political rally going on in town (that would have to be the county seat, Marshall, or the next largest town which is Hot Springs, Madison County, NC). According to the family story, there was a pontificating politician being introduced. Mack snuck up to the crowd to listen. When the introduction got to "You'll find no finer man than ______________!", Mack hollered, "Here's one!"

According to the family story, this simple joke made a major uproar and Mack felt compelled to leave the area. He and Alice took their children to Cincinnati, Ohio. If you know anything about this part of the Western NC mountains, you would wonder how Mack ever thought of moving to a big city so far away! Did they just go as far as their money lasted? Was there jobs he had heard about? I know he did move because their 3rd child, Minnie Conner, was born in Cincinnati, OH on 5/19/1889. All the rest of their children were born in Madison County, NC.

It is said that while they were in Ohio, a woman was found murdered. An eyewitness described the murderer and Mack was fingered by the police as matching the description. He was a stranger in town so it would have been a quick and easy solution to pin it on him. But when they brought the eyewitness in to verify that Mack was the murderer, the eyewitness said it wasn't him because the murderer had a scar and Mack didn't. Then the police called the Madison County, NC Sheriff who vouched for Mack Conner saying he was a fine man and "tell him to come on home, nobody's mad at him any more."

Mack and Alice moved back to Madison County, NC and never left again.

This has been passed down so I don't know if this really happened. And if it did, are the details, as I have them, all correct? How do I verify it? I would think there would be newspaper articles about it either in Madison County or in Cincinnati but how do you search them from SC or without knowing the name of the murder victim. If you have any suggestions on how I could research this story, please contact me at Mom25dogs@gmail.com

Hiram and Harriet had a little girl, Sallie Fannie Barnes. She was born on 7/6/1866 in Davidson County, NC.

Hiram was unable to cope even after his marriage and birth of his daughter. When his daughter was only 14 months old and his wife was only 28 yrs old, Hiram hung himself in his father's backyard on 9/7/1867. He was only 27 yrs old. It was 2 years after the end of the Civil War and during the terrible Reconstruction era. Hiram must have really been suffering. But he left his wife and baby daughter to face this new harsh world. Times were very tough in the South after The War.

As a suicide the church wouldn't allow him to be buried in their church cemetery. That must have been very hard on Hiram's parents. John and Margaret had been members of Piney Meeting House. It became Churchland Missionary Baptist Church and now is Churchland Baptist Church. Anyway, they were charter members and had donated land for the church and I'm sure Hiram grew up in that church. Now, their son couldn't be buried there. So John took some of his land that was next to the church cemetery and created the Barnes Family Cemetery. Hiram was buried there. John and Margaret are buried there too. John and Margaret remained as members of their church for the rest of their life so I assume their fellow members helped them through their grief even though they wouldn't allow Hiram to be buried in the church cemetery.

Avery Lawrence Barnes was born on 7/9/1877 in Davidson County, NC to Lewis Frances Barnes (DOB 10/1/1851 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 9/21/1934 in Davidson County, NC) and Annah Elizabeth Brawley (DOB 12/15/1856 in Davidson County, NC; DOD 3/2/1929 in Davidson County, NC). Avery was one of maybe 12 children (there are a couple that may fit elsewhere in the tree but I currently have them as Lewis and Annah's children).

Something happened (polio?) that caused him to be lame and he had to use crutches the rest of his life. Evidently his father, Lewis, was concerned for Avery's ability to make a living so he made sure Avery had a good education for the times. Avery attended Reeds Accademy. About 1897 he gained ownership of a dry goods general store and the house beside it in the community of Churchland, Davidson County, NC. He was also made the Postmaster there in 1897.

Avery married Addie Mae Michael on 1/28/1900 in Davidson County, NC. They lived in the house beside the store.

My Grandma Vivian married Oscar Alexander Huneycutt on 9/2/1922 at the Burkhead Methodist Parsonage, Winston-Salem, NC. But Great Aunt Bill lived with her mother until her mother died. Then Bill lived on in their little house for 31 years until she had to move into a nursing home before her death. She never married or worked outside the home.

After Grandpa Avery's death, Granny Barnes must have sold the store and house. She had a house big enough to take in boarders and she boarded girls at a girl's school. Later she and Bill moved into a small 4 room house that her son-in-law, Oscar Huneycutt, built for her. Oscar was a carpenter and farmer all of his life. He and a friend went and camped there while they built the house. He would tell how cold it was because it was winter. The house never had indoor plumbing. Even as a little girl I was amazed at how primitive it was. They had a wood stove for heat and a well outside the back door for water and a privvie for a bathroom. I've often wondered why she had to move out of the larger house and into the little house.

I'm thinking it had to have been the early 1960's when I visited. I was born in 1959 and I was a little girl. I remember Granny Barnes being so thin and Aunt Bill was gruff. We rarely ever saw them so I was a little scared of Aunt Bill. I remember another time when Grandma Vivian and Aunt Ruth took me to visit Uncle Gilmer and Aunt Mackie at their 2 story farm house. I remember the big tree in the front yard that we sat under (again, in the time before air conditioners). Even when we would go visit Dad's parents, they had a big pecan tree in the backyard and every Sunday afternoon the whole family pulled chairs out under the pecan tree. The grownups would visit and talk while the men whittled and the women snapped beans or peeled peaches. I often took a nap on a homemade quilt spread out under the tree. Here is a photo of Grandma Vivian sitting out under the pecan tree.

They are both buried in the Barnes Cemetery next to Churchland Baptist Church, Hwy 150 in Davidson County, NC. They were strictly Lutheran. He was a farmer and worked as a blacksmith at the Spencer Yards. This was a railroad maintenance yard in Spencer and it was large. It was considered a great employer. John Barnes and Margaret Ratz

John Barnes and Margaret Ratz
John Barnes (Dob: 11/3/1816 in Rowan County (now Davidson County, NC; Dod: 9/19/1892 in Churchland, Davidson County, NC) was a son of Richard Gilmer Barnes, III and Fanny Johnston. He married Margaret Ratz, (aka Margaret Ratts, Margaret Rats, Margaret Rattz) (Dob: 10/30/1817 in Davidson County, NC; Dod: 1/7/1890 in Davidson County, NC) on 3/18/1841 in Boone, Davidson County, NC.

John's parents were members of the Piney Meeting House (now Churchland Baptist Church) and his father gave a small portion of land for the church. John inherited 160 acres of land from his father in 1839 and he built a two-story log house on Hwy #150 where they made their home. He was a farmer and an active member of county affairs, especially the church. When the Piney Meeting House split and became Churchland Missionary Baptist Church, John and Henry Clement gave 2 acres each to the church. He remained an active member until his death. He left no will so the land was divided among his 5 surviving children and his granddaughter, Sallie Fannie Barnes Greene.

They had 8 children with only 6 living to adulthood:
1) Lewis Frances Barnes (Dob 10/1/1851 in Davidson County, NC; Dod 9/21/1934 in Davidson County, NC) married to Annah Elizabeth Brawley on 10/14/1875 in Davidson County, NC. This is my direct ancestor.

2) Hiram Lindsey Barnes aka H.L. Barnes (Dob: 4/4/1839 in Davidson County, NC; Dod: 9/7/1867 in Churchland, Davidson County, NC) married Harriett N. Simmerson on 2/22/1866 in Davidson County, NC. Hiram was shot twice in The War but he survived to continue fighting. He was at Appomattox Courthouse when Lee surrendered and had to walk back home from Virginia. When he got home he had mental problems due to The War and, though he tried to make a new life as a farmer with a new wife, he couldn't handle it and hung himself in his Daddy's home. It was 2 years after The War and during the terrible Reconstruction era. He left his 23 year old wife and 14 month old daughter to face life in a decimated South. He was the first person buried in the Barnes Cemetery. Since he was a suicide, he couldn't be buried in the church cemetery so the Barnes family started the Barnes Family Cemetery across the street from the church.

3) Sarah Ann Elizabeth Barnes (Dob: 1/3/1842 in Davidson County, NC; Dod: 1/22/1909 in Davidson County, NC) married Joseph Napoleon Davis on 1/4/1866 in Davidson County, NC.

4) Charles Adolphus Barnes (Dob: 1/11/1847 in Davidson County, NC; Dod: 9/6/1935 in Davidson County, NC) married Alice Joan Kinley on 6/25/1869 in Davidson County, NC.
