This imposing old gentleman is my husband's great great Grandfather, Gamewell Calhoun Harris (1853-1933). He was too young to serve in the War of Northern Aggression but he had 3 older brothers who served and it's an interesting story. Anderson Kennedy Harris, James Marion Harris, and William Edward Harris served. They served together in the 18th SC Infantry that was put together in Laurens, SC (Union County). Anderson married Sallie Austin and they had 2 sons, twins, in 1869. James Marion Harris was married in 1857 to Sarah Ann Bevill and they had 3 children together before he died. William Edward Harris was born in 1845 and did not marry before he died. He was considered simple or slow and yet he went with his 2 brothers to serve in the Confederate Army even though he was only 16 when the War started. Two of the brothers were at Petersburg, VA when the Yankees detonated the explosives they had situated under the Confederate soldiers. They had tunneled under the Confederates. The 18th Infantry was virtually over the detonation point. James Marion was on leave and at home when it happened. William Edward was killed. Anderson Kennedy was buried up to his neck but he was dug out by a Yankee as he promised to give him the tobacco in his pocket. James Marion was one of the last Confederate soldiers to die as he died in April 1865 at Burgess Mill, VA. Anderson Kennedy survived and made his way back home alone.
Gamewell's sister, Millie Eugenia Harris, married J. Gist Farr and this gentleman donated the land for the little Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Union, SC. The family attended this church and it's where Gamewell, his wife and family are buried. Gamewell was a very religious man.

The photo does not have Gamewell in it but his wife, Sally, is the elderly woman in the center. Front from Left to Right: Feral Harris , Lizzie Shaw (Ida Mae Shaw Harris' mother) , Gene Carroll Harris, Sr. , Bernice Lemond Harris, Ida Mae Shaw Harris, Clyde Harris. Back from Left to Right: James Minor Harris, Walter Edward Harris, Edward Boyd Harris. Notice the background of this picture. The house has some hostas bordered by a board so there was some landscaping going on there. The porch has some potted plants which makes me wonder which one of the women loved houseplants and gardening. The little boy isn't wearing shoes and has grimy knees! Isn't that like a little boy? Since little G.C. was born in 1914 and he looks like he would be about 8-9 years old then this would date the picture to the early to mid 1920's.
Gamewell Calhoun Harris (DOB: 5/26/1853 in Union County, SC; DOD: 10/21/1933 in Union County, SC) was a son of Fleming Matthew "F.M." or "Mattie" Harris and Augusta Ann Harris. Gamewell married Sarah "Sallie" Clementine Brakefield (DOB: 4/18/1860 in Union County or Chester County or York County, SC; DOD: 3/6/1930 in Union County, SC) on 7/20/1876 in Union County, SC. I haven't pursued the Brakefields as of yet so I'm not sure where she was born. I've seen different records that show Union, Chester or York County.
Gamewell and Sarah lived on the family farm with Mattie and Augusta Ann in the 1880 Census.

Gamewell inherited the Harris family farm when his parents died. As for the old home place, it was the home of Fleming Matthewand Augusta Ann Harris and is where they raised their family. It went to Gamewell when Augusta Ann died. He sold to an Adams who sold it to Hornes. The land is located on the highway to Adamsburg.
